Friendly Match Review: AS Roma Academy Abuja v Total Child Model Schools.

AS Roma Academy Abuja hosted football teams from Total Child Model School on Saturday, the 20th of March 2021 at the National Stadium in its first friendly fixture of the first term.

Over the weekend, the U13 and U15 teams of AS Roma Academy Abuja, fully kitted, squared off against teams from Total Child Model School, a secondary school situated in Dutse, Abuja.

The U13 team got us underway at 9:15am and triumphed with a 5-0 win against the secondary school team. Both halves were action packed but it was the second half that contained the most action with 3 of the 5 goals coming in the second half.

Overall, the team put up a decent performance and dominated for most of the game.

The U15 team were up next and faced a more composed team from Total Child School. The game started with both teams having their fair share of dominance on the ball but it was the Total Child’s team that found the back of the net first. They scored two more goals to end the game with a 3-0 win.

The U15 team put up a decent performance and will be looking to work on their lapses from the game.

The AS Roma Academy Abuja U13 and U15 players were excited to play friendly games against the Total Child’s school. It was an opportunity to assess the academy’s strength and development thus far and the players are looking forward to playing more games like these.

Going by their respective schedules, players enrolled into the academy were at the M.K.O National Stadium Abuja for their trainings.

Their training continues this new week starting the U5 categories, finishes with the U17 and U19 categories and will run until Saturday.

Off the Pitch

The academy organized a media day for some of the beneficiaries of its scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to players who perform exceptionally at the academy’s tryouts. These players were part of the first tryouts sessions and were recommended by the technical team after impressive performances at the tryouts. In the coming weeks, the academy will unveil more scholarship recipients.

As with last week, we had some exciting news from Italy as AS Roma announced a new sponsorship with New Balance on Tuesday the 16th of February. New Balance is an American sports footwear and apparel brand and will become “the club’s Official Kit Supplier from the 2021-22 season onwards.” More details about the partnership can be found on the club’s website.

What’s Happening Now

Registrations for the tryouts as well as enrollment into the academy are still ongoing. The process for tryouts registration remains the same; payment of the registration fees of 16,125 naira, completion of the application form and submission of one passport photograph. Registered players will receive their schedule to have their tryouts at the academy.

AS Roma Academy begins operation in Abuja

Italian football giants, AS Roma have begun its Youth football academy operations in Abuja, Nigeria.

UEFA licensed Coaches, Portuguese Andre Joao Castro from Lisbon (Level 1 in Talent identification) and Italian Giovanni Musumeci are expected to take charge of proceedings during the trials, with the sole aim of discovering and nurturing talents in the football-crazy country.

The Italian giants partnered Abuja-based academy Garden City Panthers with the aim of producing a steady stream of elite players with strong links to the Serie A club.

AS Roma operates one of the premier academy development programs in the world. Through this relationship, coaches will gain insights into best practices gained through decades of top-level development experience, and that’s information and expertise that will be passed directly on to discovered players.

The initiative will see the academy focus on giving opportunities to boys and girls with great football talents from ages 5-17. Registration is ongoing.

 Trials with the Academy will begin from the 7-9 January 2021, in three centres across Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

 The centres are Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja; New Capital School, Asokoro and Guards Brigade Aguiyi Ironsi Cantonment.

Plans are also underway to set up the AS Roma Academy in other cities outside Abuja like Port Harcourt, Yenagoa, Benin, and Lagos.

The academy, an all-year-round football outfit offers the opportunity to learn the training methodologies and techniques of the club.

Scholarships for 60 people have been allocated for exceptional players in U-13, U-15, and U-17 cadres from indigent families.

And with the advice of AS Roma’s technical staff and specialized local coaches, every player will be supported to reach their full potential while learning the training & educational approach used by AS Roma’s Youth Sector.
